Bird Watching

For any Bird Watching enthusiast a visit to Bougainville is simply a must! While Papua New Guinea has a well-known reputation as a birdwatchers paradise, there are more bird species on Bougainville than there are on mainland PNG. With 98 non-marine bird species, Bougainville is second only to Guadalcanal in bird diversity among the Pacific Islands east of the Bismarck Archipelago.

Here you can spot the rare Moustached Kingfisher (only found in Bougainville), the Pied Goshawk, Solomon Sea Eagle, Bougainville Crows, Island Imperial-Pigeons, Mackinlay’s Cuckoo-Dove, Ultramarine Kingfisher, Beach Kingfisher, Cicadabird, Steel-blue Flycatcher, Island Monarch, Yellow-throated White-eye, Brown-winged Straling, Pacific Swallow and many more!

There are also reports of a few unidentified birds. One the locals call the “Odidi”, named after bird song is sometimes heard around dawn. Rotokas Ecotourism can get you right into the interior of the island and to the highest of altitudes, maybe high enough to spot the elusive “Odidi”.
